The first single from the album, ‘Survive’, is an inspirational song for these trying times and spawned from his own personal experiences. Dean had this to say about writing ‘Survive’: “I come from a long line of railway workers, brick layers, shearer’s, cleaners and stockmen. Battlers of working class Australia. I wrote this song from my own experiences and what I have observed existing in this world pay cheque to pay cheque. This song is for anyone working the daily grind just to survive. Just to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. ”Travelling from east to west across our terra firma performing on the Showcase Tour last year had a flow on effect for Dean. ‘4TRAK Sessions Volume One’, is stripped back, real and incredibly soulful. The release of ‘4TRAK Sessions Volume One ’with Deans’ raw, intimate and haunting vocals takes you on an emotive journey. There are some overtones of Jeff Buckley creeping onto a couple of the songs that will get the hair’s prickling on the back of your neck. Dean set himself a challenge at the onset of the ‘4TRAK Sessions Volume One’, to release a song per week and here, the first offering of that challenge. He has engineered, produced, mixed and mastered this ten-track album, and includes an influential Gerry Rafferty classic, ‘Don’t Give Up On Me’. Hailing from Queensland and now based in Sydney, Dean has musical blood in his veins. He’s been travelling the performers highway from a very young age and started playing the drums first, which soon led to guitar lessons from the ripe age of thirteen. I feel a great deal of relief knowing that FINALLY this song will be released to the world. Simple Things was co- produced in Sydney with Graham Buzz Bidstrup of GANGgajang and The Party Boys. Written/directed by Ben Steel, this documentary goes beyond the bright lights of the Australian entertainment industry to explore the reasons why so many creative workers currently experience life under a cloud of darkness. The Entertainment Industry is widely perceived as glamorous, fun, exciting, and well paid. But some recent and alarming statistics reveal another, darker side of the industry that we love. Suicide attempts in the industry are more than double the national average, creatives suffer 10 times higher anxiety levels, 7 times higher sleep disorder levels, and 5 times higher depression levels than the national average. This project aims to thoroughly explore the devastating research, hear from people in all corners of the industry, shine a light on the issues, and inspire and initiate change. While this single and film may not reach and save every life, we hope it will have enough impact to at least save one, and that it will spark much needed conversations about mental health. ‘Simple Things’ is just the perfect musical backdrop for this film and once again timely. Dean jumped at the chance to have his song on the soundtrack and to share his message with as many people as possible.
